The Wonderful World Of Politics

In the 1920's, four presidents resided over the decade, Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921),  Warren G. Harding (1921-1923), Clavin Coolidge (1923-1929),and Herbert Hoover (1929-1933).
Woodrow Wilson began what would become known as the Palmer Raids in 1919 with appointing of A. Mitchell Palmer as Attorney General. Palmer then lead a task to get rid of Communists in the U.S. government. He used the Espionage Act of 1918 and the Sedition Act of 1919 to get it done.Palmer worked to have suspected Communists rounded up and they were held without bail. Palmer's popularity declined when his prediction of a mass Communist attack failed to occur.
In October 1919, the eighteenth amendment was passed. This amendment began Prohibition, or the ban of alcohol. Alcohol couldn’t be transported, sold, or manufactured. In 1920, the National Prohibition Act (or Volstead Act) took effect.  The Volstead Act gave state and the US governments the right to enforce prohibition.  Prohibition caused the increase in crime rates.  Crime rates increased because people wanted to make money by illegally selling alcohol, these people were called bootleggers. Some bootleggers ran speakeasies, or secret bars or places that had alcohol.  Prohibition allowed criminals and gangsters to become rich. Gangsters were parts of gangs; they protected the crimes that they were involved in by using weapons. Sometimes, they even killed people. Al Capone was one of the most infamous gangsters. Al Capone was a bootlegger and was involved with many other crimes including bribery, prostitution, and many more. Al Capone was eventually caught and convicted for not paying taxes. Prohibition wouldn’t end until the 1930’s when the 21st amendment is passed. The 21st amendment legalizes alcohol.
President Harding was president from 1921 until 1923. During his presidency, Harding pushed for the Department of Veteran Affairs. This department would deal with helping veterans and giving veterans benefits. During his presidency, the Fordney-McCumber Tariff was passed. This tariff increased tax rates. Harding’s presidency was ended in 1923 due to his death.
President Coolidge was president from 1923 until 1929. When Harding died, Coolidge stepped up from vice president and became president.  Coolidge passed the immigration act. The immigration act limited the amount of immigrants that could immigrate to America.  Coolidge also believed in neutrality and supported it completely.
In the early 1920s, during President Coolidge’s campaign, the Teapot Dome Scandal happened.  This scandal was when the navy’s oil reserves were secretly leased to private companies. This scandal ruined Coolidge’s chances of being reelected. In 1924, the Democratic convention took place. In the election, two democratic presidents were running against each other. These two democrats were complete opposites. Eventually these two candidates withdrew, and one new Democratic candidate, John Davis, ran for president.
Davis lost during the election and president Hoover won.  Hoover became president in 1929 and was president until 1933. In 1929, the Wall Street Crash happened. The stock market crashed and America entered the Great Depression. This would cause a rise in unemployment, a bad economy, a loss of money, and a very rough time for many. The Great Depression lasted until the late 1930’s.
